Hemingway & New Stanley Hotel

Dear Max:
Thanks for your two letters enclosing royalty reports statistics for income tax etc. I am afraid I do not understand your remark about "What business advice!" I gave Franklin. In order to aid you I went over his entire translation, 2 weeks of steady work, got him a jacket, explained every point to him that you asked me to, and showed him just why and how the contract you offered him was just.
If you were unwilling or unable to push or advertize this last book as you have former books is no reason to act as though I were working against your interests with Franklin. If you knew the number of times I have explained to him that he could trust you absolutely you would not write in that tone.?
Another thing you might remember is that there is a time in every mans life, if he is worth a damn, when he has to be unpopular. The only writers who survived the war were the ones who did not believe in it. You have to believe in writing I am against and outside of this present damned YMCA economic hurrah business and you will find, when it is over, that I will be neither old fashioned, nor behind the times. I will be the same as always, only better, because I will have stuck to my job and will know a damned sight more. But when a publishing organization seems unable to keep up a pretence of believing in you- How is the public expected to respond.
Have seen 83 lion- I've shot 2 black maned ones --2 very big bull buffalo- excellent heads of Eland, Roan antelope, record Impalla, good Grant and Robertsi Gazelle, Bushbuck and water buck. Also a very big leopard. And 2 cheetah. Charles has killed a fine lion and a marvellous buffalo- and has some fine heads.
He and Pauline are very well. I have had Tropical dysentery for last 2 weeks. Hunted every day but 2 with it But those 2 were something. OK. now. passed as much as a pint and ½ of blood a day. Flew in here about 400 miles yesterday over Ngorongoro Crater, Rift Escarpment to Arusha, then here to get some injections. Rejoining the Safari on the 21st at the Crater. It takes them 5 days to get there from where I got the plane. We hunt Rhino then greater and lesser Kudu and Sable. Have killed every thing,
including Buffalo, with the Springfield 30-06 and the little Mannlicher. Ordered the Plane from Victoria Nyanza (Mumbulu think the station is)
Took the plane in to ease my ass and get the dysentery injections. That's a hell of a lousy disease. Your whole damn intestine tries to come out. Feels as though you were giving birth to a child. Will fly back out to meet the outfit. Dr. Says am though the worst of it. Had really very light case. This is the finest country I've ever been in. Believe we will settle out here. Wonderful people and splendid climate. Pauline is mad about it. Come out of the bush on Feb 20 - Go down to a little island off Lamu at the mouth of the Tana river where have hired an empty Arab house to fish for swordfish-S They report them 18 feet long (Probably bunk) Young
Alfred Vanderbilt is going too and Philip Percival (who we've been hunting with) is going down to fish with us. He's the man who got Roosevelt his lions and is a wonderful bird. But would rather fish than do anything. Have had a wonderful time with him. Have heard some marvelous stories.
Well so long Max.
You would be crazy about this country.
Best luck,
Ernest
