Dear Caresse:-
If you will return me the Mss. to N.Y. I will be very glad to send you a check for 700 dollars from New York on October First. Am very sorry to have cashed your checks or would return them with this letter.
The Story is over 3,000 words long as I stated to you -it is not fragmentary but is quite complete in its-self-You may remember I was quite reluctant about the entire business and agreed to it at your solicitation- not mine- The terms, (except for size of
edition which I stipulated as 125 when we first talked and later raised to 150 to please you) were entirely yours- I doubt if you could consider that I sought publication I consider the entire thing off and will be glad to return you your contract at once if you wish, as well as releasing you from the Sun and Torrents options.
Yours always
Ernest Hemingway
(written in haste)
Having just had to pay $350 for a 1st edition of a book of mine of 58 pages brought out in 350 copies (I got this one for the doctor) containing nothing as good as what I gave you? I cant feel tragic about anyone paying $700 to publish an edition of 150 copies with 5 hors de commerce for the editor'-of a story I could have sold in N.Y. for a minimum of $1500
I'm not a bit angry but truly cannot dicker on such things--nor be in a position of defending or peddling what I write- So please absolutely and finally consider it off-
Best luck to you-
