Dos:-
Things are pretty well steamed up with the elections day after tomorrow- over 900 candidates but less than 100 of the right --23 different parties- Republican landslide in various colors Red White and Black Republicans-
The govt has rightly stopped work on the Coruna-Orense RI. (Motor trucks and buses are killing R.R.S) and in consequence the Gallegos are proclaiming the Social Republic of Galicia (until work begins on R again) and are General Striking on election day and refraining from voting-Andalucia is coming to boil but will not probably boil over until after Cortes in order to see what land partition will amount to- The workers comitees have gotten all harvesting machinery banned- (You see it isnt much like Russia)
Navarra has gone for el Cristo Rey in the biggest possible way--and it is no uncommon thing for a prelate to shoot down a good republican from the top of an autobus or for a Carmelite to destroy with kicks an agitator- 23,000 Navarros in Pamplona bull ring 2 weeks ago enthusiastic for Don Jaime who has promised to cross the Pireneos with the sword in one hand, the Cross in the other and the Sacred Heart of Jesus on his chest-He came into Spain incog and swore an oath as King of Navarre anddefender of faith on Sacred tree of Don Carlos etc. Is now in Bayonne-allthat is being directed from Bayonne-Catalonia is waiting to do business-Madrid loves the Republic- which, as soon as any one takes power-Lerroux etc. they shift from left to right faster even than in France-The King is permanently out-Ramon Franco etc. are well bughouse and are being read out of the party-
Their great ambition is to really bring off an air revolution (Cuatros Ventos-ism) against Anybody in power.
Sunday may prove me all wrong on all of this- Am sending big collected bunch of papers for backhouse reading- Have been saving ones with dope-La Libertad is now Le Temps-consequently all my buddies areprosperous-
Have been working like hell until it got too hot 42°-46° in Shade- Been following politics Closely- Seen a few funny things-
Most bull displays lousy- Present republic all for bulls but ganaderos have just about ruined the bloody bulls-How the hell are you? We could have a fine time here now-Communists have no money at all--or could make a pretty good show-Except for Andalucia-which had an Arkansas crop season last year-very damned few out of work- Chances for Marxian revolution nil- May yet have a terror though- If worst comes to worst history of Ist Republic will repeat- Pauline and Pat and Bumby all fine- Am taking Bumby to Pamplona- Hadley fine too- went up to Paris to see her and Bum-Write me for anything you want-
We live here damn well on 30c a day the two of us. Now is the time to buy anything if anybody had money- Were you ever in Sierra de Gredos? Barco de Avila is wonderful town-Killed a wolf there while we were there- Bear paw nailed to door of Church-
Good trout- River Tormes that flows down to Salamanca- wild goats- Eat better than Botins-same dishes- Swell big clean rooms- no chinchas--? all people nice- damned intelligent- old banner of Garibaldi from 1st Republic at Verbena of San Juan-All for 8 pesetas a day-
You are the great writer of Spain- if you would naturalize Katy could be Mrs. Ambassador--to any court you name- They all think I am bullshitting because I claim to be a friend of yours- Nobody has read Manhattan less than 4 times- In spite of descriptive introduction you are supposed to be an old man about Unamunos age- Otherwise how did you have time to know the Bajo fundos so well and have so much experience-I swear to god they think I am one of these Guys who claims to know the toreros when I say we are old pals- Send me a book inscribed to me in warm terms or I will be lynchiado-ed as an impostor- They have taken to
lynchiaring considerably-Write the dope- Love to Katy from Pauline and me-
Yrs always
Hem-
